Public reaction to a wall of my art - framed in graffiti

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

A pop-up gallery in an abandoned bank, not your usual first show. It was the first time I've shown a wall of art (sort of) on it's own. And It was great seeing how people react to it. Here's a piece I almost didn't hang that grabbed a lot of attention, another I thought might, didn't. All together a positive and encouraging day.

What will be hanging when the show opens?

Up for a surprise at the opening? The curator asked for a little more time to decide which of these works to hang in the member's show. Join me and find out Sunday, September 19th from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Carriage Barn Art Center, in New Canaan, CT. They are both encaustic and pastel on wood done in 2009. carriagebarn.org Update: and the winner was image 1 - Showing through October 16th 2010.

Detritus of my painting process leads to something new

Here are a couple of images composed from the fragile little bits that happen when I'm working on my encaustic paintings. There are about a dozen pizza boxes filled with the detritus so there's a lot of potential. I've been assembling them into sculpture studies, these are too fragile to travel but the forms have influenced my drawing as well. The high resolution scans greatly enlarge and reveal the detail in these tiny complex objects and make pretty impressive prints.

Triggering the Creation Stories thinking - Aldrich Museum presentation

0013-steve-hunter

I made a presentation of my work, mostly the Creation Stories project, at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT last Saturday. There were many great artist's presentations that evening. See the two coats of paint's post for links to all the artists presenting.

Preparing the presentation really helped focus my thinking on the project. What defines this work for me is that the viewer is given an open ended image rich with possible interpretations, and more than a few bits of stuff that might look like emerging creatures or some cosmological event. Here is an image from the presentation that hasn't found it's way onto this blog yet (Creation Story No.13) the painting that triggered the project. It was one of the first paintings I did in such a fluid (molten) way.

Four Ways to Be will be showing at The Carriage Barn Art Center in New Canaan, CT through June 21st. The opening is May 2 from 4 to 6 pm - I'll be there. The four abstract figures include one that has been functioning as my facebook profile picture for a while now. Using a technique I developed combining encaustic, pastel and a hot transfer to paper.
